DOUG BIRD

He was an important part of the Kansas City bullpen throughout most of the 1970s, but when he was acquired by the Cubs in 1981, they thought he would make a better starter.

They were wrong.

He started 45 games for the Cubs in 1981 and 1982, and allowed more home runs than any other pitcher in baseball (31). While it's true they gave up their best pitcher (Rick Reuschel) to acquire Bird, they gained something that Reuschel never would have been able to provide.

A world class mustache.

Bird turned 58 years old last week.
