Barry Foote hit sixteen home runs as the Cubs everyday catcher in 1979. Other catchers might have been better offensively and defensively, but no other National League catcher in 1979 had a mustache nearly as bushy as Barry Foote's. While it's true manager Herman Franks called Barry a "whiner" on the day Franks resigned in 1979, it's also true that you could almost hear the mustache-jealousy in his voice.

Foote turned 56 years old this week.

Comment: My brother and I always used to joke about when Barry Foote Rick Reuschel and Herman Franks stood on the pitcher`s mound at the same time..."Look out! The mound`s gonna collapse!" Great memories of watching Foote chug around the bases too. And when they traded him of course he went on a wild hitting spree.

Comment: Foote once hit a homerun on to Waveland that hit the pavement and bounced so hard that it broke a window in the yellow appartment building that sits behind left field.

Comment: Those striped Cubs uniforms were the worst ones they ever wore.
