MR. CUB

He remains the most popular player in Chicago Cubs history, Ernie Banks. The first African-American to play for the Cubs, and a fan favorite for his entire time with the team (the only team he ever played for), Ernie was known for his sunny disposition, and his legendary hitting skills.

The two-time MVP hit over 500 home runs, but Ernie also played in more games lost by his team than any other player in baseball history. His Cubs of the '50s and '60s were among the worst teams of all-time. Of course, it wasn't Ernie's fault. He is among the top 5 all-time Cubs in games played (1st), at bats (1st), hits (2nd), runs (5th), doubles (3rd), home runs (2nd), and RBI (2nd).

In a little known bit of trivia, he also was the first African-American manager. When manager Whitey Lockman was kicked out of a game in 1974, Ernie was the acting manager for one inning. Frank Robinson became the first full-time African American manager just a few months later.

He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1977.
