Ferris Bueller's Day Off is a 1986 John Hughes movie that has become a touchstone of popular culture in America. It stars Matthew Broderick as Ferris Bueller. The movie follows this high school senior as he decides to skip school and spend the day in downtown Chicago with his girlfriend and his best friend. He does it with incredible flair, while avoiding his school's dean of students, his resentful sister, and his parents.
The movie was filmed in and around the Chicago area. Among the famous locations; the Sears Tower, the Art Institute, the Board of Trade, and of course, Wrigley Field. The three friends catch a day game that day, and it was an actual Cubs game, not one recreated for the screen.
The game took place on Wednesday, June 5, 1985 at Wrigley Field. The Cubs were hosting the Atlanta Braves, and the score was tied 2-2 in the top of the 11th inning with the Braves batting. Claudell Washington is batting against Lee Smith as Leon Durham holds Paul Zuvella on first base. (In the movie, the fry cook tells Mr. Rooney, who sees it on television, that the score at that point was 0-0.)
The Cubs eventually lost that game in the 11th inning. Washington flied out for the first out of the inning. The batter after Washington was Rafael Ramirez and he hit a two run home run off Lee Smith to win the game.
The Cubs completely collapsed that season after their entire starting rotation spent time on the disabled list. The only other highlight of the the 1985 season was when Pete Rose tied Ty Cobb’s record in Wrigley that September.
The date "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" was released, the Cubs lost again (June 11, 1986). Their pitching staff was still in tatters. The starter that day was Guy Hoffman, who lost to the Pirates in Pittsburgh. Hoffman started only nine games for the Cubs over parts of four seasons.
Ferris Bueller remains an important film in the eyes of a certain generation, but unlike one of the locations in the film--Wrigley Field--it remains to be seen whether or not it stands the test of time.
