RICH GOSSAGE
As the closer for the 1988 Cubs, Gossage got the 300th save of his career. Unfortunately, it was one of only 13 saves he got that year, his only season with the Cubs. His ineffectiveness as the closer caused the Cubs to trade their young outfielder/first baseman Rafael Palmeiro for closer Mitch "the Wild Thing" Williams...a trade that in retrospect, the Cubs would like to have back.
Goose Gossage will be inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame in a few weeks thanks to his incredible run as the closer for the Sox, the Yankees, the Pirates, and the Padres (including that 1984 Padres team that beat the Cubs in the playoffs). Gossage's mustache, however, was already in the mustache Hall of Fame when he wore the Cubbie blue in 1988.

BONUS MUSTACHE: Gary Matthews
A key member of the 1984 Division champs, Gary Matthews was acquired at the beginning of the '84 season from the Philadelphia Phillies. The Cubs had ten former Phillies on that team, including Ryne Sandberg, Larry Bowa, Bob Denier, Dick Ruthven, Keith Moreland, Richie Hebner, Jay Johnstone, Dickie Noles, and Warren Brusstar.
Of that bunch, only Brusstar had a better mustache than Matthews.
